  2. Why is the letter W called 'double U' rather than 'double V'?

    ell.stackexchange.com/questions/181760/why-is-the-letter-w-called-double-u...

In old and Middle English (before 1500) u and v were just different ways of writing the same character. At first a "double-u" sound was indicated by "uu". Norman scribes introduced something like w, but it could be written as UU or VV. It was only with the introduction of printing that the vv form came to be common.

  3. W, is it "doble u" or "doble v"? - SpanishDict

    www.spanishdict.com/answers/111848/w-is-it-doble-u-or-doble-v-

There was a "V" which was sometimes pronounced like a "U" and sometimes like a "V." When two "Vs" were together, the pronunciation was more like we pronounce a "W" today. The letter "W" was a later, maybe medieval, addition. So, "Double U" and "Double V" are sort of the same thing. By the way, there was no "J" either.

  4. This would be true whether spelling V-A-C-Double U-M or some sequence as J-3-Double U-4-underline (J3UU4_) as in a password. One would not usually mistake this for J3W4_, because the W in that would be pronounced differently, as explained above. If the speaker or listener had any doubt, they could always ask for clarification.

  11. @smci: no, "U.S" is not correct. You need either two periods or none. (But at the end of a sentence, the second period does double duty as the sentence-ending period.) Also, "U.S." is not an acronym. If it were, it would be pronounced the same as the personal pronoun "us". –
