History. [edit] At the time of formation, Kerala had only five districts: Malabar, Thrissur, Kottayam, Kollam, and Thiruvananthapuram . On 1 January 1957, the Malabar district was trifurcated to form new districts of Kannur, Kozhikode, and Palakkad, bringing the total to seven districts.
In Kerala, the administrative divisions below the district are called taluks. There are 78 taluks with 1670 villages (including group villages).
