My research puts that gun in the 1975-76 production year. The other is a 6 1/2" barreled 29-2, blue, with serial number N280xx. I think that may put it in the 1974 ...

The N frame in 44 magnum, or most any heavy recoiling pistol, can be a bit of a challenge to control with full house loads. I have heard stories of Model 29's that were bought back in the days when they were glorified by Hollywood, in the Dirty Harry movies, that had only fired 6 or less rounds.

The Model 29-2 was manufactured from 1962 through 1982. The Model-3 eliminated the recessed cylinder. Hope this helps!

Model 29 - 8 3/8 inch barrel - What's it worth. I am looking at possibly buying a Model 29, with what appears to be the 8 3/8 inch barrel. It has pachmeyer stock and seems to be in good working condition. The blueing is a little worn, especially around the barrel. The serial number is AYY3375. I can't find definitive proof, but that appears to ...

At another forum I frequent, a poster made the claim that the Model 29 will develop mechanical issues upon extensive use of .44 mag ammunition. He further stated that .44 Special should be used, and .44 Mag only sparingly, and that the Model 29 issue with .44 Mag ammunition was well known and acknowledged at Smith & Wesson forums.

The Model 29-3 came out in 1982 and this was a sad day for Smith and Wesson. The Model 29 continued and the Model 29-7 ushered in the era of MiM parts. Under no circumstances should you ever buy a Model 29-7. These are schmoed-out pieces of junk and are best used as paperweights.

  11. Serial number lookup on a 29-2 please. - Smith And Wesson Forums

The stainless steel version of the Model 29 is the Model 629 which came out in 1980. I assume the hammer and trigger on yours are case-hardened and the ejector is blued. If so, you have a nickel revolver from the factory.
