    Most mid range pistol powders will work fine for 40 S&W loads. Alliant: Bullseye, Unique. Hodgdon: Universal, HP38, HS-6, 700X. Ramshot: True Blue, Silhouette. Winchester: W231. You can go with faster powders such as Red Dot, Clays, Trail Boss, Zip, but that is more for low recoil/slow velocity loads.

    I have a S&W 66-4 357, I had be using 158 HP with 296 powder, a friend is showing me how to cast bullets, it is interesting. I have so much of shotgun powder I use in my 12ga. Blue Dot & Green Dot (Alliant Powder) I got with Alliant about the use of the two powders. Green Dot has many loads for the 38 to 357. Blue Dot only has for the 38sp & +P.

    The .45-70 will safely hold more than 20.0 gr of Blue Dot with a 300 gr bullet and that may not be the most accurate load for your gun. However, since they are pretty pleasant loads to shoot, it shouldn't be a chore to work up what's best for your use. I usually use a "formula" to determine a safe starting point with these Blue Dot loads.
