The park's central theme rests around entertainer Dolly Parton 's childhood swimming in the rivers of the Great Smoky Mountains. Dollywood's Splash Country operates from May through September.
The Pigeon River flows through a deep gorge near the eastern boundary of the park, separating the range from the Bald Mountains to the east. The Plott Balsams border the range to the south.
