The University of Colombo (informally Colombo University or UoC) is a public research university located primarily in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It is the oldest institution of modern higher education in Sri Lanka. Specialised in the fields of natural, social, and applied sciences as well as mathematics, computer sciences, law, and Technology.
Campus. The University of Colombo occupies an estate of 50 acres (200,000 m 2) in the heart of the city of Colombo known as Cinnamon Gardens. The administrative center of the university is the College House, which houses the office of the vice chancellor, with its period architecture is a city landmark.
The Faculty of Medicine is the oldest faculty of the university and oldest medical school in Sri Lanka. Established in 1870 as the Colombo Medical School later renamed as the Colombo Medical College, it was integrated as a faculty of the University of Ceylon at its formation in 1942.
In 2015, SLIIT established its School of Architecture, offering a three-year degree in architecture. In 2016, introducing 16 new research-based degrees including PhD and MPhil degrees approved by the Ministry of Higher Education, Technology and Innovation of Sri Lanka.
Geoffrey Bawa was born in Colombo on 23 July 1919, [ 4][ 5] the youngest of two sons to Major Benjamin Bawa, Sri Lankan lawyer, who was of part European parentage, [ 6][ 7] and Bertha Marianne née Schrader, a Burgher of mixed Sinhalese, German and Scottish descent. [ 4][ 8][ 9] His older brother, Bevis, became a landscape architect. [ 4]
The building has over 1,500 m 2 (16,000 sq ft) of floorspace, and is located in the Cinnamon Gardens area of Colombo. An up-to-date library with volumes of literature on almost all subjects is available for the use of research for delegates visiting the BMICH. To facilitate with banking needs, a bank is located near the main hall.
