Sioux City (/ s uː /) is a city in Woodbury and Plymouth counties in the U.S. state of Iowa. The population was 85,797 in the 2020 census , making it the fourth-most populous city in Iowa. [ 3 ] The county seat of Woodbury County, Sioux City is the primary city of the five-county Sioux City metropolitan area , which had 149,940 residents in 2020.
The area of Sioux City, Iowa was inhabited by Yankton Sioux when it was first reached by Spanish and French furtrappers in the 18th century. In 1803, during the presidency of Thomas Jefferson, France sold a vast portion of central North America to the United States of America. This "Louisiana Purchase" was largely unexplored by white settlers.
The Sioux City metropolitan statistical area, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area consisting of four counties in three states – Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota, anchored by the city of Sioux City, Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the MSA had a population of 145,940.
