I have been taking the bus from the eastside to Seattle and back (about 20 miles) for about 7 years now. I remember the morning bus being 15 minutes late one day, and two hours late during a heavy snowfall. In the afternoons, it's 2-5 minutes late about once a month, but more than that only 2-3 times in all those years.

Yeah, there is no metro, but if you don't have a car and absolutely need to get there, you can always get off at West Falls Church Metro to Dulles Airport and cab it into Sterling or take a bus. 11-19-2008, 09:06 AM. TootsieWootsie. Location: Utopia. 1,999 posts, read 10,565,235 times.

To answer your questions, you could take either a Metro bus or a Sound Transit bus, whichever suits your fancy or your schedule. They both go to the same downtown. Metro costs less than Sound Transit. Sound Transit has cushier seats that adjust slightly. Six of one, half-dozen of the other from the Mercer Island P&R, I think.

The BxM8 bus looks pretty good, though the Sunday service is a bit far from where I would be staying. When you talk about the track work, would the trip be on the order of an hour and a half or longer? If it's longer the bus starts to look better, but if it's 1.5 hours or less I can deal with that.

Metro-North is not 24/7? That's news to me. I thought that, in the past, I had researched ALL the trains serving the greater Downstate New York region and found that the Metro North system did run 24/7 (i.e., there was still "some" degree of train service in the middle-of-the-night -- between 12:30 am and the 5:30 - 6 am time that the train service resumes running more frequently).

And no guarantee that the bus would mesh with yr work schedule. Driving or by bus or train, you'd likley spend as much time traveling as you might on the job adn be totally exhausted. Plus with all the travel expense (bus fares or gas plus the cost of parking in the city) you'd be beter off just renting a room or a share someplace.

My wife and I are considering moving to Monmouth County. Without getting into too many details, I am very familiar with the area and I work near the Port Authority in Manhattan so the bus is my likely mode of commuting. As such we are targeting being within 10 minutes of a park and ride for the Academy Bus either at PNC or Exit 109.
