Usually rural is defined by density and built form rather than by municipal boundaries. So we can ask at what density (or whatever other important markers) does a place become rural? So why not for urban and suburban in the same way? Then, at density (or again, any other factors) does a places become urban? Or suburban?

While I've been living in the exurbs of Chicago for many years, I still identify more with rural than with urban. The years I spent as a teenager living on a farm made a permanent and lifelong impression on me. I can't stand urban living - the more dense the environment, the more I'm looking for the exit sign.

I agree that it takes more than numbers. A well-defined downtown is a must, and yes many college towns work well as a smaller urban setting. My present town is only 6,000 peeps and while it does have a real downtown, it lacks several of the qualities I desire. The town we hope to move to, Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island, is maybe 15,000 people.
