In Quanzhen, Yang Guo is often picked on and bullied by his fellow students, and discriminated against by his master, Zhao Zhijing. Yang Guo flees from Quanzhen and ventures unknowingly into the nearby Tomb of the Living Dead, where the Ancient Tomb School is based.
The protagonist, Yang Guo, is the orphaned son of Yang Kang, the antagonist in The Legend of the Condor Heroes.The couple Guo Jing and Huang Rong take Yang Guo under their care for a short period of time before sending him to the Quanzhen School on Mount Zhongnan for better guidance in moral values and orthodox martial arts.
Zhao Zhijing (趙志敬; Zhào Zhìjìng) is the most senior of all Quanzhen members after the "Seven Immortals". He was Yang Guo's master when Yang Guo was in Quanzhen. He dislikes the boy, does not teach him any practical martial arts, and allows his other apprentices to bully him.
In Quanzhen, Yang Guo becomes an apprentice of Zhao Zhijing, one of the apprentices of one of the senior members of the "Seven Immortals". However, Zhao holds a grudge against Guo Jing after the latter defeated him in an earlier misunderstanding. Zhao Zhijing then vents his frustration on Yang Guo after Guo Jing left.

Later, Wu brothers bully Yang Guo and releases him to fight with the Wu brothers and Guo Fu, but Yang Guo beats them and runs away. Yang Guo meets Zhou Botong and they go to Quanzhen. At the gate, they are stopped by Zhao Zhijing who doesn't recognize who Zhou Botong is. Yang Guo bullies Zhao Zhijing and returns to the Ancient Tomb.
