btw, u/werid I just noticed that some of the programs in the GUI list are not really just simple GUIs, but whole archive managers/media servers with youtube-dl in its backend.
youtube-dl and the yt-dlp fork are a command-line program to download videos from YouTube.com, as well as many other sites.
The top Google result, namely MrS0m30n3/youtube-dl-gui seems to be unmaintained Tartube looks really powerful, but it's not quite what I'd have in mind when thinking about a really nice looking GUI. I do understand that that's more of a fault of the underlying tech, aka Gtk 3 jely2002/youtube-dl-gui looks really nice, I'll probably check it out.
FYI: GUIs for youtube-dl are what are referred to as "front-ends" or "wrapper" interfaces. It means that they are an interface that runs in-front of (or wraps around) the actual underlying application - which in this case is youtube-dl.
If you are looking for the most simple of Youtube-dl frontends, this should make you very happy. It works, does what it says it does quite well and there's also Docker instances for x86 as well as arm too, so those of you on Raspberry Pi's should be happy with this.
POSSIBLE COMMON ISSUE: It looks like you are posting about a youtube-dl Graphic User Interface called 'youtube-dl-gui', written by MrS0m30n3 on GitHub. That project has not been updated since 2018, and is considered abandoned as well as broken in terms of its ability to interact with the current underlying youtube-dl program.
usefullness of youtube-dl-gui I like the idea of using a command-line program for downloading content. It would seem to be simpler in all respects, b/c and despite a GUI.
youtube-dl (yt-dlp) operates with best, bestvideo, and bestaudio. "best" is the old pre-merged format with video and audio merged already. it was the main format before the individual formats appeared. it's still around.
I'm hard-pressed to think this came from the 3+ year old files from [MrS0m30n3/youtube-dl-gui]. If I were you, I would look for rogue toolbar installations in the browser and perform a multi-product antivirus and malware sweep of your system
