Within the boundaries of the historic county of Cheshire, it borders Cheadle Hulme, Gatley, Heald Green and Cheadle Heath in Stockport, and East Didsbury in Manchester. The original Cheadle Hulme railway station on the Crewe line, about 0.3 miles (0.5 km) south-west of the current structure, was known simply as "Cheadle".
