The Shure SRH840 are described as “professional monitoring headphones” designed for “professional audio engineers and musicians” and “optimized for studio recording and critical listening.”. So when I found a new, sealed set for $145 delivered vs. the normal $199 retail price, I decided to just go for it.
Back in 2009, Shure released a new line of closed-back, full-sized headphones, which included the SRH240, SRH440, and SRH840. The latter two received a lot of interest, though the flagship (at the time) got the lion's share of that.
SRH1540 is a new closed back flagship from Shure. Currently selling for $499USD, it is selling for the same price as Shure's open back flagship, SRH1840. Don't let these numbers fool you. Shure intended the SRH1540 to be at the level of SRH1840, and hence lowered the price of SRH1840 to match that of SRH1540.

Rating: 8.9. Sound: 8.9. Intro. The SRH1840 is in the end an open SRH1540, even though I can't tell if the hen or the egg was first. But in the end it doesn't matter, because SHURE manages the transformation in both directions. For me, the SRH1840 is a very harmonic and coherent headphone that is convincing over the whole frequency band.

Comfort, Isolation and Microphonics: Comfort is another of Shure’s strengths, being very ergonomic with the angle of entry being perfect, the memory wire preventing too much strain on the ears. The housing is light, and fits fairly flush in the ears, the housing doesn’t allow the deepest of insertion though.
The Shure SRH 940 is my first closed headphones and I am both intrigued and disappointed at the same time. Packaging It comes with an awesome carrying case along with generous contents - extra pads and two replaceable cables (coiled and straight). I wish other audio manufacturers (cough.. Beyer.. cough) would be as generous as the folks at Shure.
