Overall index crime across New York City dropped another 2.4 percent in May 2024, compared to the same month last year, with the major crime categories of murder, burglary, grand larceny, and grand larceny—auto each seeing dramatic reductions.
Incidents of violent crime remain at historic lows in New York City. But people’s views on guns and crime are often more influenced by what they see and hear, rather than by hard numbers.
Overall index crime in New York City increased by 11.2% in October 2021, compared with October 2020 (10,118 v. 9,095). While Burglary saw a 13.7% decrease for October 2021 (1,231 v. 1,427), Robbery increased by 15.8% (1,450 v. 1,252) and Felonious Assault increased by 13.8 % (2,123 v. 1,865).
Overall index crime in New York City decreased in November 2022 by 1.2% compared with November 2021 (10,196 v. 10,323). Three of the seven major index-crime categories saw decreases, driven by a 14.1% decrease in rape (110 v. 128), a 6.0% decrease in burglary (1,231 v. 1,310), and a 5.5% decrease in grand larceny (4,187 v. 4,430).
Arrests for major felonies are up nearly 29% so far in calendar 2022, compared with the first seven months of 2021. Overall index crime in New York City increased in July 2022, by 30.5% compared with July 2021 (11,619 v. 8,906).
