Thank you! Even if you get jobs all day long, which you don't, transcribeme's base rate comes out to about $3.75/hour. I don't know about going the QA route, and if that's lucrative, but I know each test is a minimum of 3 hours of unpaid work, and if you fail you have to wait at least a week to try again.
A lot of the reviews and feedback I’m finding from past freelancers is pretty old. It looks as though TranscribeMe has addressed some of the previous issues and improved their customer service (from what I can see on their site) but it looks like you still have to put in quite a bit of work at low pay to make actual money on their site in the long run.
But it made me tough. You see, my journey with Rev started only three days ago. In three days with Rev, I've made $12.34. Yes, that's correct. 1 hour application process, 1 day wait for approval, and 1 day of work. I moved up to Revver level after one single day without even completing 45 minutes of audio yet.
I started last October and for the first few weeks was earning around $5 a day. Then I passed the First Draft exam and was able to start earning around $10 a day. Two months after joining I passed the QuickStep exam, and since then I've been able to earn $30 to $40 a day if I want to.
TranscribeMe is 100% legit. They pay $20 per audio hour via Paypal. You can also get access to more files (thus more earnings) if you take the British, Australia and New Zealand accent tests. There are also advancement opportunities such as joining their Special Teams or becoming one of their reviewers (QA).
It's a bit harder to get into than others (it's an "entrance" exam followed by 5 more exams), but it's really worth it if you can get in. Their jobs pay more than other websites. Their tool, called STOE, already transcribes most of the files; you just correct formatting, punctuation, inaudible bits, etc.
I glanced at the 7th and 8th grade math exam and with one look, seeing that it was fractions, word problems and measuring of triangles i exited out of it. I signed up for literably which seemed quite nice according to the job description. Get paid 10 dollars an hour to transcribe childrens audio readings. To type it out phonetically.
It's been mentioned in a few blogs across the internet as well. $.33 per transcribed minute. Since it can take several passes to get a sound bite transcribed right, that translates to $7-$10 an hour for an average, decent typist with good listening skills.
This means you only make money for the amount of work that you do. Transcribeme pays $15/per audio hour. It takes a professional transcriber about 4 hours to transcribe one hour of audio. So that's $3.75/hour. Doing QA can be a bit different, potentially more lucrative.
ADMIN MOD. How much can 5-8 hours of work make me on TranscribeMe? I get that TranscribeMe gets an exploitive rep with their pay of $15 per audio hour when that much work will require 4 or so. What I want to know is if those numbers are pretty much "fixed", as in the pay per audio hour is definitely starting around $15 and an audio hour will ...
