A growler is an electrical device primarily used for testing a motor for shorted coils. A growler consists of a coil of wire wrapped around an iron core and connected to a source of alternating current. When placed on the armature or stator core of a motor the growler acts as the primary of a transformer and the armature coils act as the secondary.
A less common type of dashpot is an eddy current damper, which uses a large magnet inside a tube constructed of a non-magnetic but conducting material (such as aluminium or copper). Like a common viscous damper, the eddy current damper produces a resistive force proportional to velocity. A common use of the eddy current damper is in balance scales.
In this state the armature flux is pushed completely out of the rotor. The state is very brief, as the current in the damper winding quickly decays allowing the armature flux to enter the rotor poles only. The generator goes into transient state; in the transient state the flux is still out of the field winding of the rotor.
