ALL spots are dangerous in big surf, some more unforgiving than others. If you are struggling to get outside, you're probably better off NOT making it out. Better safe and on the beach than being lifted out by a helicopter (and it happens several times every year!). Check out the Surfing Tips page for must-know info, especially on etiquette.
90% of SoCal comps are at Oside Pier, S Jetty, Salt Creek or HB Pier. Even the OC middle and HS comps are in Oside. There are some weekends where kids are surfing a school heat at S Jetty and then sprinting to the pier for an NSSA heat. it’s out of hand. Id think the bigger gripe on the NS would just be the crushing crowds in general.

Surfing causes muscular imbalances. It also. on the whole, is a lousy aerobic exercise. If you correct these imbalances and improve your aerobic fitness, you will be able to surf longer and remain injury free. That translates into surfing better. Now re the Indo Board, anything that sharpens balance isn’t going to hurt your surfing.

Lucky to have a fairly decent sized S swell during our trip because you normally have to book these spots (camping + Island Packers ferry) a few months in advance. Spot was crumbly 4-5ft right hander that broke over a reef on a shelf with some kelp around. Only felt comfortable surfing it for those. Was still fairly sharky feeling.
