What CarMAx I had was a VERBAL contract which is binding in California as if it were in paper format. Well, they broke that contract twice. Now, for the coup-degras, CarMax says they have been paid and sent me my title and registration and license plates and I STILL have the $40,585.69.
CARMAX can locate a car for you and have it shipped to your branch, however, and if you don't like it, you can walk away from the deal. So, to summarize, CARMAX for ease of purchase and refund policy and probably better "disclosure" of the car's history. DEALER for possibly better price, better selection and better warranty options.

October 2015 Answer . No they don't haggle. Of course you can just ask them to call you when they lower the price on a car. That's a kind of haggle. Carmax, from all I've heard, is a good place to explore and try out cars, because their inventory is large. Here's Edmunds opinion on CARMAX.

My wife bought a 2019 Chevy equinox premier AWD with 15000 miles from CarMax. Loves it but it's making frequent knock sound, sometime seems middle, sometimes under drivers seat, a couple times seem more behind. We have until Tuesday to take it back.
