Multiplication table from 1 to 10 drawn to scale with the upper-right half labeled with prime factorisations In mathematics , a multiplication table (sometimes, less formally, a times table ) is a mathematical table used to define a multiplication operation for an algebraic system.
Many common methods for multiplying numbers using pencil and paper require a multiplication table of memorized or consulted products of small numbers (typically any two numbers from 0 to 9). However, one method, the peasant multiplication algorithm, does not.
An imaginary number is the product of a real number and the imaginary unit i, [ note 1] which is defined by its property i2 = ā1. [ 1][ 2] The square of an imaginary number bi is āb2. For example, 5i is an imaginary number, and its square is ā25. The number zero is considered to be both real and imaginary. [ 3]
The group {1, ā1} above and the cyclic group of order 3 under ordinary multiplication are both examples of abelian groups, and inspection of the symmetry of their Cayley tables verifies this. In contrast, the smallest non-abelian group, the dihedral group of order 6, does not have a symmetric Cayley table.
Definition. The octonions can be thought of as octets (or 8-tuples) of real numbers. Every octonion is a real linear combination of the unit octonions : where e0 is the scalar or real element; it may be identified with the real number 1. That is, every octonion x can be written in the form. with real coefficients xi .
A binary number is a number expressed in the base -2 numeral system or binary numeral system, a method for representing numbers that uses only two symbols for the natural numbers: typically "0" ( zero) and "1" ( one ). A binary number may also refer to a rational number that has a finite representation in the binary numeral system, that is, the ...
