In 1971, Newport News High School was converted, along with George Washington Carver and Collis P. Huntington High Schools, to an intermediate school after the city's school district freedom-of-choice plan was struck down in the federal court and school districting went into effect. In 1980, Newport News Intermediate School was closed.
This school was opened in the fall of 1965 with grades 8-11, and the Junior class of that year became the first Senior class the following year. The class of 1970 was the first to go through all five years at Denbigh. For a time, Newport News had 5-year high schools, and Denbigh (the northernmost of the city's high schools) had 8-12th grades.

Originally located in Warwick County, it became part of the Newport News Public Schools system in 1958 when the citizenry of the former Warwick County voted to be politically consolidated with the neighboring independent city of Newport News.
