The house opened on July 10, 1979, making the house at Pittsburgh the seventh one to open in the country. In 1994 an additional house opened in Pittsburgh adjacent to the first house. The new house came from a need for a place for families who needed to stay long-term or be isolated from the public, due to immunocompromised children.
