The following map depicts the provinces and districts of South Africa. The district municipalities are labelled with numbers that correspond to their district code, while the metropolitan municipalities are labelled with letters that correspond to their names. Further details of the districts are listed in the table that follows the image.
Provinces. Since 1994, South Africa has been divided into nine provinces: the Eastern Cape, the Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West, the Northern Cape and the Western Cape. The boundaries of the provinces, which are specified in the national constitution, have been altered twice by constitutional amendment.
Thane. Palghar. Raigad. Ratnagiri. Sindhudurg. Mumbai. ^ Nashik and Ahmednagar districts do not culturally belong to Khandesh region. Culturally, Nashik and Ahmednagar districts share a pattern called Gangathadi. North Maharashtra is the geographical region representing all four districts except Ahmednagar.

The publication of the work marked a watershed in the historiography of South Africa by for the first time giving indigenous Africans a central role in the history of the country.

The Alfred Basin in Table Bay Harbour, named after Prince Alfred, is completed.
