In computer science, the shunting yard algorithm is a method for parsing arithmetical or logical expressions, or a combination of both, specified in infix notation. It can produce either a postfix notation string, also known as Reverse Polish notation (RPN), or an abstract syntax tree (AST). [ 1 ] The algorithm was invented by Edsger Dijkstra ...
Edsger W. Dijkstra invented the shunting-yard algorithm to convert infix expressions to postfix expressions (reverse Polish notation), so named because its operation resembles that of a railroad shunting yard. There are other ways of producing postfix expressions from infix expressions.
Infix notation. Prefix notation. ("Polish") v. t. e. Infix notation is the notation commonly used in arithmetical and logical formulae and statements. It is characterized by the placement of operators between operands —"infixed operators"—such as the plus sign in 2 + 2 .
For example, most calculators use operator precedence parsers to convert from the human-readable infix notation relying on order of operations to a format that is optimized for evaluation such as Reverse Polish notation (RPN). Edsger Dijkstra's shunting yard algorithm is commonly used to implement operator precedence parsers.
Binary expression tree. A binary expression tree is a specific kind of a binary tree used to represent expressions. Two common types of expressions that a binary expression tree can represent are algebraic [1] and boolean. These trees can represent expressions that contain both unary and binary operators. [1]
Polish notation (PN), also known as normal Polish notation (NPN), [1] Łukasiewicz notation, Warsaw notation, Polish prefix notation or simply prefix notation, is a mathematical notation in which operators precede their operands, in contrast to the more common infix notation, in which operators are placed between operands, as well as reverse Polish notation (RPN), in which operators follow ...
Immediate-execution calculators are based on a mixture of infix and postfix notation: binary operations are done as infix, but unary operations are postfix. Because operators are applied one-at-a-time, the user must work out which operator key to use at each stage, and this can lead to problems.
Great Britain runner George Mills has been reinstated in the men's 5,000-meter final at the Paris Olympics, after falling during the qualifying heat and blaming French runner Hugo Hay.
