Bangladesh Road Transport Authority was established under section 2A of the Motor Vehicle Ordinance of 1983 and the subsequent 1987 amendment. It has functioned since January 1988. BRTA is a regulatory body to control, manage and ensure discipline in the road transport sector of Bangladesh, as well as to maintain road safety.
In June 2020, the BRTA proposed it’s new idea of personalised number plates, where people can choose their own preferable registrations numbers, with an increased registration fee. If two of the last four digits are repeated, (eg. xx-0011, xx-0022, etc.) the registration fee will be two times higher.
