Rice, Grantland (01 November 1880–13 July 1954), sports journalist, was born Henry Grantland Rice in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, the son of Bolling Hendon Rice and Beulah Grantland, farmers. He was named for his maternal grandfather, former Confederate major and cotton merchant Henry Grantland, who was an important influence in Rice’s childhood.
