Enterprise Car Sales is an American used car retailer headquartered in Clayton, Missouri and is a service of the Enterprise Rent-A-Car brand, which is owned by Enterprise Holdings, one of the major car rental operators. As of 2020, the company operates over 145 dealerships in the United States.
In addition to car rental, Enterprise Holdings also markets other transportation services under the Enterprise name including commercial fleet management, used car sales under the name Enterprise Car Sales, and commercial truck rental operations. Enterprise Rent-A-Car was established in St. Louis, Missouri in 1957 by Jack C. Taylor.

By 1980, the rental fleet had grown to 6,000 cars. In 1989, the fleet had grown to 50,000 and he changed the name of the company to Enterprise Rent-A-Car. [3] By 1992, Enterprise surpassed $1 billion in revenues and by 1995, it reached $2 billion in revenues. In 2007, Enterprise purchased National Car Rental and Alamo Rent-A-Car. [3]
Enterprise grew from a fleet of 5,000 cars to more than 900,000 vehicles internationally during his tenure. With the purchase of Vanguard Automotive Group, Enterprise gained both National Car Rental and Alamo Rent A Car. The combined fleet is over 1.5 million vehicles rented out by roughly 100,000 employees. [2]
In 2007, Enterprise agreed to purchase a controlling share in the company from Cerberus Capital Management. [2] A sale to rival Enterprise Rent-A-Car was completed on August 1, 2007, making the combined Enterprise-Alamo-National the largest US car rental operation, ahead of The Hertz Corporation and Avis Budget Group.
