Blepharospasm is a neurological disorder characterized by intermittent, involuntary spasms and contractions of the orbicularis oculi (eyelid) muscles around both eyes. [1][2][3][4] These result in abnormal twitching or blinking, and in the extreme, sustained eyelid closure resulting in functional blindness.
The corneal reflex, also known as the blink reflex or eyelid reflex, [1] is an involuntary blinking of the eyelids elicited by stimulation of the cornea (such as by touching or by a foreign body), though it could result from any peripheral stimulus. Stimulation should elicit both a direct and consensual response (response of the opposite eye).
Atropine, a tropane alkaloid, is an enantiomeric mixture of d - hyoscyamine and l -hyoscyamine, with most of its physiological effects due to l -hyoscyamine. Its pharmacological effects are due to binding to muscarinic acetylcholine receptors. It is an antimuscarinic agent.
Side effects in less than 10% of people include other eye problems such as itching, foreign body sensation or dry eye, as headache or hyperpigmentation (darkening) of the skin around the eye. [4] Hyperpigmentation is an adverse effect of bimatoprost, [5] while the others are fairly common for eye drops in general.
Lagophthalmos. Lagophthalmos is the inability to close the eyelids completely. [1] Blinking covers the eye with a thin layer of tear fluid, thereby promoting a moist environment necessary for the cells of the exterior part of the eye. The tears also flush out foreign bodies and wash them away.
