Of course it's possible to splice Ethernet cables, unlike standard Ethernet cabling Lowrance is using shielded cables, the reason for this is to avoid noise emissions which can harm other systems onboard the vessel. The tech also used the termanology about these dome units is that they are " bullet proof ". He said they have had no issues. Lowrance tech was very friendly and very knowlegeable/helpful. Also said there will be a updated version in 1/08.

I found the solution - It's a screen calibration issue, either re calibrate the screen or use the '+' button to Turn to Port instead of pressing the touch button. Power off the MFD. Push and hold "flag"-button (waypiont) in. Power up the MFD. Hold the "flag" button in. Screen calibrate will come on your display.
The NAC-1 autopilot computer is the same as used by Lowrance Pilot-1 so it will integrate the same way as Pilot -1 with your HDS Gen3. Your HDS Gen3 is as capable as NSS Evo2 in saltwater, so no reason to worry. If you can use NAC-1 depends on the size of the steering ram. Read simrad AP24 documentation, if RPU80 can be used NAC-1 and Pump-1 ...
