The Model 60 doesn't get big dollars in either version, and some people expect to pay less for store brands, even though they are mechanially equal to Marlin marked guns. Prices for a model 60 Marlin in xcellent condition seem to run anywhere from around $100 or a bit ...

Unfortunately, the serial number for your Marlin Model 1898, exposed hammer pump action shotgun is just out of the range of existing serial number records. The Marlin pump action shotgun records that exist start at 19,601 and end at 67,000 in December of 1904. So, from that, you should figure your shotgun would have been shipped in 1905.

John Ross was commissioned to do a replica of Remington's painting for the cover of one of Marlin's catalogs. If memory serves me it was the 1900 catalog. The Marlin Firearms Collectors Assn. gave these statues away at some of their meetings and shows back in the 1990's, and Marlin may have given some to retirees, but they sold them outright also.

Marlin wasn't very good with record keeping got a while. That rifle was made from 1922 to 1938. The earlier ones had a "S" prefix because they were found to have a weak bolt. After they got that problem fixed they went to a "SH " prefix. A Army Col. Wm. Brophy wrote a book named " The Marlin Firearms Co".
