The college is affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME). It is the oldest historically black college west of the Mississippi River and the nation's first urban work college.
McLennan is one of three colleges in Waco along with Baylor University and Texas State Technical College. McLennan Community College is located on 200 acres (81 ha) on the north side of town near the Bosque River and Cameron Park. The college also owns Highlander Ranch, a 200-acre (81 ha) farm about 5 miles (8.0 km) from the main campus.
The college offered its first classes in September 1968. Since that date, it has served as an educational, vocational, and recreational center for residents of Community College District 520, an area encompassing all or part of Kankakee, Iroquois, Ford, Grundy, Livingston, and Will counties.
