The Army established the 1st Special Operations Command (1st SOCOM), under U.S. Army Forces Command, in 1982 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina (NC), as the headquarters for SF, Psychological Operations (PSYOP), Civil Affairs (CA), Ranger, and Special Operations Aviation units. A 1983 Army study validated the need for dedicated ARSOF support units.
The 77th Special Forces Group (Airborne) was activated at Fort Bragg, NC on 10 November 1953 under command of Lieutenant Colonel Jack T. Shannon. Its motto was "Any Thing, Any Time, Any Place, Any How." The group built rapidly from an initial strength of only 200 soldiers.
Special Forces, which had grown to a total of seven groups in 1963, faced severe cuts in the peacetime army; as a result, 1st Group was inactivated 28 June 1974 at Ft. Bragg, NC. After a 10-year hiatus, the need for an Asian unconventional warfare force was recognized, and Alpha Company, 1st Battalion was reactivated at Fort Bragg on 15 March 1984.
Over the years, the battalion underwent several reorganizations and redesignations, notably becoming part of the Regular Army in 1967 and being activated at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The battalion also includes the histories of the 416th and 221st Signal Companies, which were integrated into the battalion through reorganizations.
