Marine "deep cycle" are not true deep cycle batteries. They are a hybrid cross between a starting battery and a true deep cycle.

You can use a 12 volt load tester on 8 volt battery with no ill effects. It just will not pull as much load as it was designed for, thus not produce as much heat. For example if the load is designed to pull 1000 watts at 12 volts, it will only pull 444 watts at 8 volts. No problem.

The 4 12 volt setup will not last as long as the 6 8 volt setup. Also, a regular 12 volt deep cycle battery will not work, it has to be a battery specifically designed for golf carts. IMO, go with the 6 8 volt setup, and get the highest amp-hour rated batteries you can afford. If well taken care of, you'll be glad you did.
