Just this year, I've done the Niagara Falls fallsview room deal for $129, return trip to Boston for $250 for 2 people, Intercontinental Hotel in Boston for <$150 a night, Delta Chelsea in Toronto for half pirce, and have a room booked for Chicago in 2 weeks for less than a third of what it would cost me from any other website, and booked (but later cancelled )a sub $400 7 night Carribean cruise.
Whoever is running the show at TravelZoo is delusional if they think people will pay $40/year for deals that you can get practically anywhere else. I would think people would pay for it if they offered a great price which they sometimes do, all they have to do is you can see the price but require membership to get a unique discount code. $40 is ...
I've used Travelzoo for many deals and you certainly don't get put in the worst room, it depends on the deal. If it's for a generic base King or Double room then perhaps. But there are many suites or upgraded options which will ensure you won't get stuck in the Expedia/Hotels.com portion of the hotel.
