First of all someone from NYC wouldn’t call Long Island or any piece of NJ “New York (as in New York City)”. Next they know the capital district and Albany, they just consider it “upstate” and the North Counrty is essentially Canada to them. The finger lakes region is 10x more beautiful than all of Ohio.
Newport area in rhode island! Newport is really nice. Narragansett is a nice little beach town too. Ferry to block island too! Nice (long) day trip from Albany. The water is clear and warm. Newport’s “2nd beach” is really nice. Mystic CT is pretty nice. Lots of shopping, great food options and the aquarium.
Slight edit. New York city is at the end of the Hudson. The Hudson river starts north of Albany in the Adirondack mountains. Hudson Source. Albany county is located at the confluence of the Hudson (north south) and Mohawk rivers (east, west). It was a very important location to reach the interior of upstate New York and Canada for the beaver trade.
There are always efforts to invigorate the arts scene, but it remains at a mild simmer. Albany also is pretty significantly segregated, areas above Central Avenue and parts of the “South End” tend to be predominately people of color. Those areas are also more rundown, more abandoned buildings, more crime.
