If the gas cap leaks air, then the fuel can push the air out of the tank, and viola, you lose prime. Now I'm getting scared it may not start at all. I figure it's losing it's prime and the cranking is necessary to get the fuel back up to the cp3.

Adding a lift pump before you have problems is a very good idea. The biggest thing that you will notice is that the responsiveness picks up as the rail psi tracks much tighter to desired. You don't need much psi at all, in fact 2 psi is enough. Getting rid of the air pocket that collects in the filters helps a lot.
