2015 cars with a touchscreen are My Ford Touch aka MFT (NOT Sync 2) 2016-2017 cars with a touchscreen are Sync 3 The touchscreen and APIM; Accessory Protocol Interface Module (for you "engineering types with 3 friends") aka Sync module are basically one unit. The cars with the non-touch screen have the 4.2" screen and a separate Sync module.
Only version 3.4.43 has the 'infinite loop' issue based on the autoinstall.lst, and the instructions below do not need to be done to the file. Follow the Ford instructions to update 3.4.50+. The following instructions are for 3.4.43(20136) only: For Sync3 with Navigation: Currently after install, the system will reboot.
To my surprise Ford is telling me I have a new update ready for my 16 GT which is currently on 3.0.20204. 20204 was pushed in late 2020 and is the last update talked about in the Sync 3.0 master thread...
4) complete android auto setup, then immediately leave it and go back to the regular ford screen and ensure audio source is set to Bluetooth 5) play media Im not really clear on how/why this helped but it's SOOOOO much better. I hope this helps others who have been having the same issues!

Acquire the sync 3 system from OEMRadio. The good news is that Sync 3 requires less wiring then MFT! Follow the picture below for DIY sync 3 wiring. Sync 3 does not require the sd card multimedia module so this simplifies the wiring to just swapping around pins and adding 4. Those 4 to be added are the rear view camera leads and MS CAN leads.
- Performing a USB update from Ford.com's website - Followed their instructions to a T and even tried formatting multiple USB sticks which are known to work in FAT32, exFat etc., but get an INSTL_ERR12 every time. - Smacked the dashboard above the touchscreen - verified to not be a fix. The car only has 21k on it and is indeed still under warranty.
The only function missing will be the Drive Mode toggle switch. However, you must sync your fordpass PRIOR to installing the new unit. It will not work with the new system. The fix is to pull your dash and reinstall your old radio to sync up as the VIN will not match and you will not get the authentication notification.
I'm not a very technical person but I saw in the sync 3 thread that some people were able to rewrite some of the installation files to overwrite and selectively install certain files. And in another thread I saw some members able to hook up one of those code clearing computers and have it boot performance splash screens instead of the stock.
