The Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB), branded as NOLA Public Schools, governs the public school system that serves New Orleans, Louisiana. It includes the entirety of Orleans Parish, coterminous with New Orleans. [3] The OPSB directly administers 6 schools and has granted charters to another 18.
In 1960, Judge J. Skelly Wright of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana ordered the desegregation of New Orleans schools in Bush v. Orleans Parish School Board. [17] In response to the order, 2,000 youths surged through New Orleans streets in demonstrations against school integration on November 16, 1960.

Lusher was founded in 1917 and for its first few decades only taught grades K-6 at its Willow Street campus. The school was named for Robert Mills Lusher, [4] the Louisiana State Superintendent of Education (1865-1868 and 1876-1879) who was dedicated to the Confederacy, segregation of public schools, and white supremacy.

It was the first high school in the State of Louisiana and as a public school was formed to educate the working-class population of the city of New Orleans. By 1855 the school had expanded to four locations. After the Civil War in 1867, the four Boys High Schools were merged into Consolidated Boys High School. [citation needed]
