Palmyra was originally called Carthage, and under the latter name was laid out in 1836. Because there was already another Carthage in Indiana, the town was renamed Palmyra in 1839 to avoid repetition. [4] The present name most likely is a transfer from the ancient city of Palmyra. [5]
Palmyra is located in northwestern Macoupin County at (39.433980, -89.995424 Illinois Route 111 passes through the village as Main Street, leading north 11 miles (18 km) to Waverly and southwest 22 miles (35 km) to Medora.
When Pennsylvania first legislated routes in 1911, present-day PA 117 was not given a route number. PA 117 was designated in 1928 to run from PA 5 (now US 322) in Campbelltown north to US 22 (now US 422) in Palmyra, following Palmyra Road and South Railroad Street while PA 853 was designated to run from Mount Gretna east to PA 72 west of Cornwall.
