The University of Kentucky ( UK, UKY, or U of K) is a public land-grant research university in Lexington, Kentucky. Founded in 1865 by John Bryan Bowman as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky, [ 9] the university is one of the state's two land-grant universities (the other being Kentucky State University ).
Origins. The Institute was chartered by the AlabamaLegislature on February 1, 1856, as the East Alabama Male College, a private liberal artsschool under the guidance of the Methodist Church. [2] The first president of the institution was Reverend William J. Sasnett. The school opened in 1859 to a student body of eighty and a faculty of ten.
