The menʼs basketball team has played at the Patriot Center since 1985 after playing prior seasons in the PE Building on the west side of the Fairfax Campus. The center opened on schedule on July 1, although the inaugural season opening was delayed one month. That summer, 60 young musical performers were chosen for training in music, dance and acting, to culminate in a production at the center. On April 14, 1982, the Filene Center was destroyed by fire.
