Prior to 1989, the site was part of Painted Rock State Park, which included camping facilities on the nearby Painted Rock Reservoir, referred to as the "Lake Unit". When the state turned control of the park over to the BLM in 1989, the Lake Unit was closed due to concerns over pollutants in the Gila River and is not maintained by the BLM.
Alamo was founded in 1890 as a stop on the Seaboard Air Line Railroad. It was named for the Alamo Mission in San Antonio, Texas. [5] Alamo was chartered in 1909. [6] Alamo's courthouse was built in 1917 and is on the National Register of Historical Places. The Lamplighter Little Theatre dates back to 1919.
